Examination of the Relationship Between Social Adaptation, Alcohol and Substance Addiction Severity in LGBT Individuals

The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between social cohesion and addiction severity among LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) individuals. This research employed a quantitative methodology, specifically a relational survey model, and adopted a cross-sectional design as a form of descriptive research. The sample consisted of 389 LGBT individuals over the age of 18 residing in the Marmara region of Turkey, who were recruited using the snowball sampling method. Data were collected using the Social Cohesion Self-Assessment Scale (SCSAS) and the Addiction Profile Index (API). The findings indicated a statistically significant and negative correlation between LGBT individuals’ overall API scores—including substance use characteristics, diagnosis, impact on life, craving, and motivation sub-dimensions—and their levels of social cohesion. Regression analysis revealed that the severity of addiction among LGBT individuals was a statistically significant and negative predictor of social cohesion levels. The study further found no statistically significant differences in overall API scores or its sub-dimensions based on variables such as sexual orientation, age, and father's educational level. However, income level was found to be significantly associated with differences in addiction severity. Additionally, while age did not significantly affect social cohesion levels, sexual orientation, income level, and father's educational level were found to produce statistically significant differences in social cohesion. Based on the findings of this study, there is a need for legal regulations that ensure LGBT individuals have free and equitable access to mental health and addiction-related services, in order to address structural inequalities that undermine their social cohesion.
