Abstract

Introduction: Gambling behavior is a social problem that negatively affects the life of the individual and other individuals in his life. In this study, the depression, marital conflict and perceived social support levels of spouses of individuals with gambling behavior were examined by comparing them with the spouses of individuals who did not gamble. Additionally, the mediating role of perceived support between marital conflict and depression was examined. Method: The sample of the research consists of 47 individuals who live in TRNC and reported that their spouses gamble, who were reached using the snowball sampling method. Socio-demographic information form, Beck Depression Inventory, Marital Conflict Scale and Perceived Social Support Scale were used in the study. Depression and marital conflict scores of spouses of individuals with gambling behavior were found to be higher than the comparison group, and perceived social support was found to be lower. In the model established based on whether marital conflict and perceived social support scores of individuals whose spouses gamble were predictive of their depression scores, it was determined that it explained 68.3% of the effect on depression. Perceived social support was found to have a partial mediator role between marital conflict and depression.
